Design and Performance of a High Temperature Superconducting Axial Flux Generator
2013
In this paper, a high temperature axial flux (HTSAF) generator is presented. In this generator the excitation of the generator is obtained by using some high temperature superconducting magnets. In order to reduce the negative effects of vibrations, the excitation is located on the stationary part of the generator. Starting, running and endurance tests of the machine are presented.
Dynamic Preisach Hysteresis Model for Magnetostrictive Materials for Energy Application
2013
In this paper the magnetostrictive material considered is Terfenol-D. Its hysteresis is modeled by applying the DPM whose identification procedure is performed by using a neural network procedure previously publised [. The neural network used is a multiplayer perceptron trained with the Levenberg-Marquadt training algorithm. This allows to obtain the Preisach distribution function, without any special conditioning of the measured data, owing to the filtering capabilities of the neural network interpolators. The model is able to reconstruct both the magnetization relation and the Field-strain relation. The model is validated through comparison and prediction of data collected from a typical …
Equivalent circuit analysis of solid-rotor induction machines with reference to turbocharger accelerator applications
2006
Theoretical, numerical and experimental studies are described that have been carried out to develop a solid-rotor induction machine design for a particularly demanding application as an accelerator drive for a diesel engine turbocharger. In this application the turbo-motor will be required to operate at speeds of up to 130 000 rpm and in temperatures that can exceed 200°C. The results show that the equivalent circuit gives predictions that are of sufficient precision for design purposes and provides a useful design tool. It is shown that the use of a solid rotor affects the value of the stator leakage reactance and influences the motor performance through this effect as well as by presentin…
Characterisation of nonoriented electric alloys under nonconventional conditions
1996
The variations of magnetic and loss characteristics of nonoriented cobalt-iron and silicon-iron sheets have been investigated using an Epstein frame. Cobalt-iron alloys have been tested under sinusoidal magnetic flux density with respect to frequency and temperature. Both kinds of alloys have also been investigated with respect to frequency, time constant wavefront and temperature under trapezoidal flux density. The qualitative behaviour is identical under both flux density conditions for all these alloys. These investigations have made it possible to model the variations of iron losses with experimental parameters, except the temperature. These quantitative evolutions differ with alloy and…
Optimization of a Sea Wave Energy Harvesting Electromagnetic Device
2008
This paper presents the optimization of a permanent magnet linear generator directly coupled to sea waves. In order to maximize energy extraction, the stochastic features of the energy source is included in the mathematical model of the system in order to satisfactorily tackle the problem. An optimization procedure which includes the stochastic features of the model is presented and a machine built on the basis of the results of this procedure is shown.
Magnetic Stochastic Resonance in systems described by Dynamic Preisach Model
2008
Stochastic resonance (SR) is generally considered as an enhancement of the system response for certain finite values of the noise strength. In particular the signal to noise ratio (SNR) and the signal amplification show a maximum as a function of the noise intensity. This effect has been experimentally observed in many physical systems and also in magnetic systems. However, as far as magnetic systems are concerned, the dynamic features of the systems have been neglected and it has been assumed that the typical relaxation time is negligible. However this is clearly a rough approximation. In order to clarify this relation, in this paper we numerically study magnetic stochastic resonance in se…
The influence of the stochastic features of the energy source on the design of an electromagnetic generator
2009
The purpose of this paper is to clarify in a general way how the unavoidable randomness of renewable energy sources influences the magnetic design of electric generator. A general model of electro magnetic generator based on the well known d-q axes analysis is given. The energy source is modelled as a stochastic variable and is included in the equations of the system. The equations are solved and, therefore, the energy output of the system is linked to the random characteristic of the energy source. As a result, the magnetic circuit and the parameters of the generator that maximize the energy extraction can be found and generally linked to the stochastic details of the source.

An electromagnetic generator for MAGLEV transportation systems
2015
The fundamental idea of this paper is to use the distribution theory to analyze linear generators in order to include in the mathematical model both ideal a non ideal features. This paper shows how the use of distribution theory can be used in order to establish a mathematical model able to describe both the ordinary working condition of a linear generator for MAGLEV systems as well the role of the unavoidable irregularities and non-ideal features.
Experimental investigation on high-efficiency control algorithms for three-phase induction motors
2020
This paper presents an experimental investigation regarding the power losses variations occurring in three-phase induction motors (IMs) as a function of the magnetization level of the machine. More in detail, the power losses identification is obtained by changing in real-time the working operating conditions of the IM drive and the IM reference flux. The sets of measurements are carried out by setting up a test bench and the obtained results confirm that the power losses occurring in induction motors can be minimized by adequately setting the direct axis current component for each IM working condition. This research represents the starting point for the conception of advanced real-time los…
